This was my favorite song from Christina Billotte Week. Please to enjoy.
“Ladybug Superfly,” Slant 6, 1995.
I could really just post every track from Inzombia with full endorsements (with the possible exception of the vaguely filler-ish instrumental track that is actually entitled “Instrumental,” and the eight-minute faux-zombie movie soundtrack at the end — but even those have their moments).
This is maybe my favorite on the album, though. You can detect a growing interest in girl-group pop and classic R&B in the songwriting, this song in particular being the fullest expression of that to date. What were some good record stores in Washington, DC in the mid-1990s? I am sure Billotte was shopping there.
Also: whistling. This woman is a consummate whistler. I think this is the first song she whistles on that I’ve posted, but it’s certainly won’t be the last.
Indie-pop whistling solos and zombie movies! Can you believe how far ahead of her time Christina Billotte was? The kids were so into that stuff in 2008; they were all listening to Peter, Bjorn and John on zombie pub crawls. She was twelve years ahead of schedule.
